Is there an affordable bathroom tile?

When looking to remodel the bathroom, the one thing we want to postpone the most is tile replacement. I’m sure you thought about all the mess it is going to be to take the ones that exist down and to put new ones up. The days without the bathroom, the amount of tiles to buy (including the ones that will break during installation).

That’s not to start talking about choosing the style and combinations you want over your walls. What will go together? Which ones are non-slip but easy to clean at the same time. In the end, we can just wonder if there really is an affordable bathroom tile…

Now, how many times have you given up on the bathroom of your dreams just thinking about all these things? Don’t let some tiles drive you away from the renovation you deserve, keep reading!

Why is tile so expensive?

There are many types of tiles, each with its own pros and cons:

  • Ceramic Tile
  • Porcelain Tile
  • Glass Tile
  • Marble Tile
  • Granite Tile
  • Natural stone tiles

The most affordable one is the Ceramic Tile, its durability and price are very cost-efficient. It is made with clay and stain resistant! In general, tiles come in a variety of colors, textures, shapes and sizes, which can make a great design in your bathroom, but even with a good glaze they are still a porous material, meaning mold is something that will be waiting for you long-term.

There are also a lot of types and levels of glaze, varying from 1 to 5, with 1 for the weakest and 5 for the toughest type of glaze. This impacts directly on the durability of the tile but also the price.

Installation can also be hard. In some cases, there is the possibility to put tile over tile and still maintain the integrity of the wall, but most cases require a more messy approach. As for the repairs, if one tile breaks, you will probably have to change the ones on its side. You will always need the help of a professional to handle cuts, breaks and demolition mess in your bathroom, or you might go weeks without it.

All that, alongside the materials, add up to the value of each tile.

When it comes to tiles, affordable is often not a good idea

When it comes to tiles, looking for affordability might mean cheap in a bad way. As mentioned, the material, the glaze and the overall quality of it may vary. This means they can break, scratch and dent easier depending on its quality.

But some tiles are cheaper than others, combining the glaze, material and installation, and you may find options that fit on your budget!

Tile Maintenance is Also Expensive

When you think of cleaning tiles, the first thing that comes to mind is the grout. Endless hours scrubbing and never getting that white back. The mold, the stains and faded colors, all that with time looks older and older.

Tiles can indeed last a lifetime, but this also means a lifetime of dirty grouts, the same design fading over time and in some cases (like natural stone tiles) re-glazing them from time to time.

So isn’t there an alternative?

Relax, your life doesn’t have to be just worrying about your bathroom wall forever. There is hope, and it is way cheaper than any tile.

Have you ever heard of wall panels? They are sheets made from different types of materials, mostly synthetic, that are wipeable and grouts free! There are a lot of types:

PVC

Made from extruded plastic with a hollow patterned inside, with a gloss finish. They are easy to install because they can be joined together. Might not be the most durable one, but it sure is a cheap option.

Laminated

Two laminated sheets combined with an MDF in the middle form a stiff panel that can also be joined to fill walls from side to side. It can be quite durable when taken care of.

Fiberglass

One of the least expensive options if you want a custom-made design. It is more prone to dent and scratch, but it is durable and easy to repair if needed. Faded colors might be an issue that, with the scratching, can add up to the value of the sheet since you’ll have to change it a few times.

Acrylic

The cheapest and most durable option! We strongly recommend the Acrylic panels to transform your bathroom, for they don’t scratch, chip or dent. There is a wide variety of designs to choose from and they won’t fade over time. Can be installed over tile and in as little as one day! And the best part is: they come with a lifetime warranty!
